Gyo Trailer

8 February

Gyo (which I think translates as Fish) is an anime film about sharks with legs. And fish with legs. Possibly zombie fish with legs, I’m not sure. The trailer is not translated and I haven’t read the manga so I don’t entirely know what is going on but I do know that I must see it because it looks pretty original and has a lot of potential to creep me the hell out. I have a fear of whales in particular and giant sea creatures in general, which is a fear that doesn’t really affect my day-to-day existence as long as I don’t watch nature documentaries, and even then it’s not so bad because I know the whales can’t get me from inside the TV and anyway David Attenborough would protect me.

Berserk: Egg of the Supreme King Footage

26 January

berserk

I’ve already mentioned how I think the original Berserk series is one of the best animes around, in fact it’s one of the few I really like at all, and I was a little surprised to hear that there were plans to remake it. It’s not as odd a decision as it might first seem though as the new version is aiming to stay much more faithful to the manga comics. While the original series missed out a lot of key plot points and characters which meant that it would have been difficult to continue with the story, this new version is going to try and cover the complete Berserk storyline – an epic spanning 22 years of comics.

Prometheus Trailer

23 December

prometheus

I am guilty of not paying much attention to Prometheus, the new Alien prequel from Ridley Scott starring all sorts of cool people like Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, The Fassbender and Noomi Rapace. I had not really recognised it’s existence because it has some wonky name instead of just being called Aliens: Zero or Aliens: Prometheous or just something to remind me why I should be interested – I love Aliens! The trailer features some lovely wide shots of a desolate planet (pictured) as well as some things falling over or exploding. I assume there will be aliens and I assume the Fassbender will be especially susceptible to facehuggers because of how his chiseled features provide extra purchase for their murderous little legs.

The Hobbit Trailer

21 December

the hobbit

The trailer for the first Hobbit film, titled ‘An Unexpected Journey’ is here and it certainly looks like more Lord of the Rings except with even more comedy dwarfs and Martin Bloody Freeman. I can’t stand his maddeningly affable face with its endless endearing bemused expressions – cut it out! I want to see him play someone losing their shit on a totally self-destructive crystal meth bender, or something really dark like a chainsaw wielding serial killer that wears his victim’s genitals as slippers, just to mix things up a bit. Ahem, anyway her is the trailer:

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer

20 December

The Dark Knight Rises trailer is here and it’s obviously very cool because, well, it’s Batman. But it is also maybe a little bit discombobulating.

U.S Sitcom DVD Boxset Christmas Roundup

14 December

christmas DVDs

With only a few days left to order last minute DVD boxsets of TV shows as half-arsed Christmas presents, I have made my definitive list of all the DVD boxsets of US sitcoms that I have seen recently instead of watching films. As a Brit I generally thought that all US sitcoms just involved things like Joey from friends and/or Charlie Sheen so I’ve just stuck with Alan Partridge and Father Ted reruns. Recently though I decided to take a trip across the pond and see what all the fuss was about. Here are my findings:

Arnie’s Total Recall DVD commentary

22 November

Total Recall

I don’t really watch DVD commentaries – if I wanted to hear someone talk over the film I would just go to the cinema – but Arnie’s Total Recall DVD commentary is both informative and hilarious. Unlike most DVD commentaries that are full of tedious insights, anecdotes and whatnot, Arnie literally just describes what is happening on the screen. And sometimes says that he liked it. It’s great, a bit like watching a movie with Arnie sat next to you (and Arnie assumes that your vision is terrible and you have brain damage).

Snow White Trailer Showdown

17 November

In that strange way that sometimes happens as a result of every ‘good’ Hollywood idea immediately spawning a bunch of imitations we have two Snow White films on the way more or less simultaneously, though to be fair I have no idea which is the imitation so lets be fair and call them both rip-offs. Great news if you are the one person on Earth that gets excited by the idea of a film about Snow White: a story which has been told a zillion times before and was pretty lame the first time seeing as it revolves around a chick eating an apple with dwarves. The thing is, one of them – called ‘Mirror, Mirror’ is being directed by Tarsem Singh, the genius behind ‘The Fall’ and the almost-genius behind ‘The Cell’ and the director of ‘Immortals’ that I haven’t seen yet. Sean Bean is in it. That’s enough to get me relatively excited.

The other one: ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ stars Kristen Stewart as the least appealing Snow White ever (I means seriously, I can understand not liking to smile because it is quite hard work, but has no-one told her that she is in films? Make a bit of effort) and is directed by someone called Rupert Sanders that IMDB reliably informs me has done literally nothing with his life so far. So let’s have a trailer showdown, because I refuse to watch two films about Snow White so I need to know which one is the definitive version:

Big Man Japan Review

23 October

I have a lot of love for bizarre Japanese films and this is definitely one of the most bizarre yet. Definitely. I’ve spent a while trying to think of how I would describe it and the best I can come up with is that it is sort of like a cross between The Troll Hunter, Hancock, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Neon Genesis Evangelion and This Is Spinal Tap. It has all the strangeness of the strangest Takeshi Miike films like Happiness of the Katakuris. If you are like me, that is all the review you will need: it’s worth checking out just out of curiosity.

Top 10 original film soundtracks

17 October

I really love is a good original film score. Not a day goes by where I don’t whistle the music from Jurassic Park or Terminator II (or a little medley of my own creation I like to think of as Terminator Park). Obviously music is very subjective and I wouldn’t dream of calling this post the 10 top best original soundtrack ever but in making the list I looked for two qualities: 1) it must be original music (so no Spawn soundtrack even though it was the best thing ever when I was a teenager) and it must be worth listening to all the way through (so no Terminator II or Jurassic Park which just have one good tune each, no matter how BRILLIANT they are).
